Crossing the Oakland Estuary

SF Bay Ferry operates two routes to cross the Oakland Estuary: The Water Shuttle between Jack London Square & Bohol Circle Immigrant Park, and the Alameda Short Hop between the Oakland & Main Street Alameda Ferry Terminals.

ROUTE INFORMATION

Main Street Alameda Ferry Terminal

The Alameda Short Hop runs between the Main St. Alameda Ferry Terminal and the Oakland Ferry Terminal. 

  • Weekdays – This route operates in two directions, from Main St. Alameda to Oakland and from Oakland to Main St. Alameda.
  • Weekends – This route is only available one-way from Main St. Alameda to Oakland. Water shuttle service is available on weekends.

Parking & Transit: Free parking is available at both the Main St. and Oakland Ferry Terminals. Bus connections are available at the Oakland Terminal.

The Oakland Alameda Water Shuttle connects Oakland’s Jack London Square and Alameda’s Bohol Circle Immigrant Park. 

  • Operations – This route operates Tuesday through Sunday between Alameda’s Bohol Circle Immigrant Park Landing and the Jack London Square Landing. The shuttle does not operate on Mondays.
  • Parking & Transit – Parking is available at both water shuttle landings. Bus connections are available at the Oakland Jack London Square landing. There are no transit connections at the Alameda landing. Riders are encouraged to get get dropped off or arrive on-foot as street parking is limited. 

  • PaymentRides are FREE for all on this route.

RIDER TIPS

TICKETS & PAYMENT OPTIONS

  1. Clipper Card or Mobile Clipper 
    Using your Clipper Card or mobile Clipper is the easiest way to pay your ferry fare. Tag On during boarding and Tag Off upon arrival in each direction.
  2. Mobile Tap-and-ride
    Ferry passengers can pay adult fares using plastic or mobile contactless bank cards—credit or debit—Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or Discover.
  3. SF Bay Ferry app
    If you’re a riding with a family or group, you can purchase mobile tickets using the SF Bay Ferry app (available to download on iOS and Android). When using your mobile tickets, remember to activate a ticket for each passenger prior to boarding.
  4. Paper tickets
    Paper tickets can be purchased onboard the ferry using cash or card after boarding. 

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I need to book ferry tickets in advance?

Alameda Short Hop:
If you are traveling alone, no. We encourage you to use Clipper to pay your fare. If you are traveling in a group, tickets can be purchased before boarding on the SF Bay Ferry mobile app. Tickets are sold as one-way only so if you are making a round-trip, simply purchase 2 one-way tickets for the ferry route you will be riding. All ferry trips are first-come, first-served.

Oakland Alameda Water Shuttle:
Service on the water shuttle is ALWAYS free to ride. No payment is required. All trips are first-come, first-served.

Alameda Short Hop:
We suggest arriving 10-15 minutes before the scheduled ferry departure. All ferry trips are first-come, first-served. 

 

Oakland Alameda Water Shuttle: 

We suggest arriving 5-10 minutes prior to departure to secure your spot in the boarding queue. Each shuttle trip accommodates up to 31 passengers and all trips are first-come, first-served. 

Alameda Short Hop:
To board, you’ll need a valid form of payment (Clipper, mobile tickets, debit or credit card, cash). 

Oakland Alameda Water Shuttle: 
Boarding is FREE – no ticket required. 

Alameda Short Hop:
Yes, all regular SF Bay Ferry vessels offer a snack bar onboard. 

Oakland Alameda Water Shuttle: 
No, this route does not offer food or drink for purchase.

Alameda Short Hop:
Yes. All SF Bay Ferry vessels and terminal facilities are ADA accessible. 

Oakland Alameda Water Shuttle: 
Yes, the water shuttle service and vessel landings are ADA accessible. 

Alameda Short Hop:
Yes. All vessels can accommodate bikes and scooters as long as they follow our bikes & scooter guidelines. Please remember that some vessels have limited capacity for bike & scooter stowage. Bike and scooter stowage is always first come, first served.

Oakland Alameda Water Shuttle: 
Yes, the water shuttle accommodates up to 14 bicycles. Bike and scooter stowage is always first come, first served.

Alameda Short Hop: 
The Short Hop route runs as a segment of our ferry service to Downtown San Francisco and/or South San Francisco. Passengers may disembark at the Short Hop stops, or continue onto the vessel’s final destination if they have a valid ticket for that route.

Oakland Alameda Water Shuttle:
All passengers MUST disembark upon arrival at each landing. If you are making a round-trip journey, you must offboard and line up in the boarding queue to reboard.
