Service Reliability & Vessel Maintenance: MV Lyra Undergoes Dry Dock

As a transportation agency providing essential public services, San Francisco Bay Ferry is committed to a high level of service reliability to ensure a better passenger experience for daily commuters and recreational riders. One aspect of guaranteeing on-time performance and minimizing disruptions is by scheduling routine biennial “dry docks” for our 18 vessels – a procedure in which vessels are removed from the water for approximately two weeks for mechanical inspections, maintenance, and repairs.

The Bay Ship service yard in Alameda frequently hosts vessels owned by SF Bay Ferry.

MV Lyra was scheduled for a dry dock this past February, receiving planned maintenance services at Bay Ship & Yacht Co. in Alameda.  This work included the removal and inspection of all the sea valves, renewal of the underwater bottom anti foul coatings, and renewal of sacrificial anodes. Additionally, the vessel’s waterjets were inspected and serviced by the manufacturer.

Throughout the dry dock process, SF Bay Ferry monitors shipyard and subcontractor performance and coordinates with regulatory agencies to renew the Certificate of Inspection (COI), which allows vessels to operate. In particular, the U.S. Coast Guard performs biennial vessel inspections to renew the COI. With consistent ridership growth over the past year, safe, reliable, and affordable service is integral to operating 152 trans-bay trips per weekday that connect 7 communities across the Bay Area.

MV Lyra cradles are rolled onto the syncrolift at Bay Ship. The vessel is centered and landed with the assistance of divers. The lift is brought up out of the water, then the vessel and cradle is transferred to the hard deck on land.
